Although humans have frequented these shores since prehistoric times, the Domaine du Rayol is a microcosm of the 20th century history as it has shaped the Var and Côte d’Azur coastline. First a holiday resort for wealthy landowners during the first half of the century, then a hotel and casino during the inter-war period, and then a tourist property project in the seventies, the Domaine du Rayol was finally bought in 1989 by the Conservatoire du Littoral with the sole aim of being permanently protected from the building frenzy that was taking place at the end of the century. Since no local authorities offered to manage the newly acquired property, the Domaine du Rayol Association was created for this purpose in 1989. This association continues to manage the Domaine.
